Introduction To Creating Your Own Web Page

Written By:
Jerry O'Donnell

Most Internet providers include at least 5MB of web space for personal web page development. In other words, you can have your own web page. But most home users have no idea how to get started. They are just happy being able to access the Internet, and if they are lucky, know how to send and receive E-mail.

But would it not be exciting to have a web page? Place pictures of loved ones on the Internet?

First, a web page is primarily a file with text in it. Certain words tell the Internet what to do. If pictures are going to be made available, that too needs to be included.

Second, once this file of files are created, they need to move from your computer to the Internet. For that, you will have to contact your Internet provider (ISP).

Now let us help you with the first step.

Begin a text file using something like NOTEPAD in Windows. (Start-Programs-Accessories-Notepad). Type the following on separate lines:

You just told the computer to begin and end a web page. Now do the File-Save command and - continued below ...

name it Default.htm. Without anything in between the lines, you have a blank web page. Let us put your name there. Between the two lines you already typed, type your name:

My Name

Now let us center it.

My Name

Let us put a title on the web page.

My Web Page

My Name

Let us include a picture separated by line breaks. Assuming you have a digital camera and your pictures have been copied onto the computer called picture1.jpg, picture2.jpg, etc.

My Web Page

My Name

See, that was not too hard. Save it and contact your ISP for step 2.
